9th July 2009 - Back on home soil...
June was a busy month as ever!
The Carmunock Highland Games were fantastic and my spirits were by no means dampened despite coming second to Sebastian Wenta, as the crowd were in great form and the sun shinned upon us all day. My home town of Carmunock is still buzzing from the event!
14th of June was the European Championships in Bressuire, France. Given the stunning location this always proves to be spectacular event however I was delighted to beat the prestigious competition to first place in this event, particularly because one of the main sponsors was a Champagne producer and included this as part of the prize. It’s fair to say I had quite a headache the following day!
The Ceres Highland Games, Fife, took place on 27th June. This is one of my favourite events, particularly given the history of the event. 2014 will be its 700th year, it began in 1314, the day after the Battle of Bannockburn. The legend tells that the Small People (The Scots!) celebrated their victory by playing highland games and so the tradition has continued until this day. I also had my own victory at this event by coming first! Coincidently The Lions were playing South Africa on the same day so I was joined by Sir Menzies Campbell, who was Chieftain, in making frantic calls to friends to find out the score, it was surreal to say the least!
I’m looking forward to the Highlander Challenge World Championships in County Antrim, Ireland on 14th and 15th July. This is Highland Games with a twist as it involves combat and wrestling harking back to the ancient highland games technique.
The World Pipe Band Championships are now only 5 weeks away so I’m looking forward to competing again on home soil!
